The overhead cabling in the Facebook data center in Prineville, Oregon, where the initial Open Compute Project designs were implemented. Are the custom hardware designs from the Open Compute Project only useful to companies building huge data centers? Or will they ever be practical for companies with smaller data centers? A new participant in the Open Compute initiative could play a crucial role in answering these questions.
